Things you should consider when building a water feature:

Location: When considering location, you want to choose a place you can easily view your water feature. Optimal locations often face back toward the home for viewing from inside or out. Also, you want to choose a site that is free from over-hanging trees, both evergreen and deciduous. Both types of trees drop damaging debris throughout the year, which affects water quality and fish health.

Type of Water Feature: The type of water feature you choose will determine many design features. There are four basic types: Koi or fish pond, plant-based pond, bog garden, and fountain.

With a koi pond, you must pay special attention to filtration and water quality and understand the number of aquatic plants you will be able to successfully grow is limited. This is due to the herbacious nature of koi. Additionally, those who choose to use small goldfish need to be aware of their rapid reproduction and "dirty" nature, requiring additional maintenance.

Plant-based ponds are typically easier to care for than fish ponds. It is wise to incorporate multiple shelves at varying depths throughout your design. Also, a key to these ponds is to ensure you have oxygen-producing plants. Various ornaments, with small pumps, can be added for extra sound and aesthetic effect.

Bog gardens are different than all other types due to the fact that most bog plants prefer moist soil to standing water. By creating small holes in your bog's liner, moisture is continuously drained. An ideal location for a bog garden would be any area of your homes landscape that suffers from poor drainage. Additionally, these gardens are often used as catch basins for pond runoff or may be incorporated into the margin of a pond. Consistent watering during drought will ensure plant survivability. Never use commercial potting soil in your bog garden.

Fountains rarely have fish or plants and often use chemicals to ensure water clarity. Fountains can be designed using most types of materials; such as, concrete, copper, rubber, terra cotta, and more.
